3 Tokyo Sightseeing Spots/東京の三つ観光スポット

I am visiting Tokyo, Japan for a month in December of this year, so I am deciding where I want to travel. Hence, I am creating a list of sightseeing places I’d like to see while I’m there! First, my top 3 Tokyo sightseeing spots.

1. Asakusa/浅草

The first temple I ever visited was Sensou-ji in Asakusa, so this is top on my list of places to visit in Tokyo. Asakusa is the best place to experience old downtown Edo (the old capitol of Japan). Asakusa was a temple town in the 7th century, and became popular during the Tokugawa era for wealthy merchants. Asakusa had become the premier entertainment district by 1840 with kabuki and bunraku, restaurants, and shops.

Asakusa - Kaminarimon

Kaminarimon is the gate of thunder, and has a bright red 100-kg lantern hanging in the middle of it. Statues inside the gate are the god of wind (right) and god of thunder (left), which protect the deity inside the temple.

Sensou-ji is the oldest temple in Tokyo. The temple is dedicated to Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, so the temple is also called the Asakusa Kannon Temple. (Even my Japanese friend from Okinawa didn’t know it as Sensou-ji). The kanji for Asakusa and Sensou are the same as well, with different readings. Read more about Sensou-ji!

2. Tokyo Sky Tree/東京スカイツリー

I haven’t been to Tokyo Sky Tree, although I have been to Tokyo Tower. Tokyo Sky Tree (634 m) dwarfs Tokyo Tower (333 m) and is the tallest tower in the world. It is the second tallest structure in the world (the tallest is the Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai). You can purchase tickets to the observation deck and enjoy a great view of the city.

3. Roppongi Hills/六本木ヒルズ

The primary reason for my last visit to Roppongi Hills was the Mori Arts Museum. I enjoy museums, especially art museums, and I was impressed by the view of Tokyo from the museum. I also got to see Asimo in his earlier stage, but I’m not sure if Asimo is still there.

These are 3 of the major places I want to visit in Tokyo! Do you have any recommendations for other places to visit in Tokyo? What’s your favorite place in Tokyo?

So jealous of you visiting Japan in December! I’ll be going back for my second trip in February next year and I can’t wait! Also visited all the places you mentioned, Roppongi was by far my favourite

    • Thanks, I’m excited about going again too! I’m glad you get to visit again in February! Tokyo has so many great places to visit. I’ll have to spend some more time in Roppongi this trip.
