3 More Tokyo Sightseeing Spots/

Standard

My trip to Japan this December is less than three weeks away! So I’m introducing more places that I’d like to visit. I’ll be spending most of my time in Tokyo, so in addition to my first top 3 Tokyo sightseeing spots, and my top 3 Hakone sightseeing spots, I’m picking 3 more spots on my must-see list.

1. Shibuya/

Shibuya is on the Yamanote Line loop, and it is a main shopping area with a happening nightlife. There is a new high-rise shopping centre called Hikarie which wasn’t there the last time I was in Japan, so I’m excited to see it! I’ll also of course stop by Shibuya 109 for more shopping. I love shopping. My fiancé isn’t as excited about shopping, so I’ll see if I can get some girl friends to go with! My style is like OL (Office Lady), especially since I’m going into the working world soon, so I won’t spend a lot of time in Harajuku.

The Shibuya scramble is also something I’d like to photograph again because it’s just this visually interesting and iconic scene. The Starbucks above the scramble provides a nice view! I’d also like to get a better shot of the Hachiko statue at the Hachiko exit in Shibuya. Hachiko is a famous faithful dog who waited at the train station for his owner everyday until the owner’s death, and then continued to wait everyday until his own death. This statue commemorates his loyalty!

2. Yokohama/横浜

Yokohama was a small fishing village until Commodore Perry arrived in the mid-1800s and forced Japan into an open-door policy. Then, Yokohama was selected as a port for international trade and is now the second-largest city in Japan (population 3.6 million).

I want to visit the Chinatown again, with amazing Japanese-style Chinese food! My Chinese friend told me that it was not at all authentic, but then again, American-style Chinese food is not Chinese-style so… I’ll just have to go to China if I want to try real Chinese food! The Chinatown dim sum is great in Yokohama.

I will also visit Minato Mirai 21 again, for the shopping. It’s a high-rise international-themed shopping centre. When I was studying abroad I ate Japanese-style tacos and a Corona there, which was much different than authentic tacos, but it had been ages since I’d had tacos at all so it was delicious.

I have not been to the Sankeien Garden, but it was recommended to me so I’d like to visit it. I love gardens, and nature, and things to photograph. It will be winter, but it should be pretty anyways!

3. Ginza/銀座

Ginza is somewhere I’d love to shop, but I am poor! So I will not be buying much there. However, the illumination, AKA Christmas lights, are beautiful in Ginza, so my fiancé and I will have a Christmas-theme date there. I stayed at a hotel near Ginza just before I left Japan after my study abroad term, but I didn’t do much in the vicinity and I don’t know much about it other than the expensive shopping!

Have you been to Tokyo? Do you have any more recommendations on sightseeing spots? Either in the places I’ve listed before, or new ones that I haven’t even thought of! Let me know in the comments if you have any suggestions.

Hi there, if you like Ghibli’s films I would suggest to visit Ghibli Museum in Mitaka. (if you have not been there yet) I will definitely go there 🙂

    • Thank you for the suggestion! I didn’t realize it was so close to Musashino. I will try to fit that into my schedule, because I’ve heard great things about the museum. It seems like you must purchase tickets in advance, so I’ll have to see if I can find more information.

        • I won’t be in Musashino this time, but nearby. I stayed there before, so it’s a good reference point for me and it makes it easier to judge the distance!

I’m going to try to get tickets for the museum at Lawson when I get to Tokyo, since they must be purchased in advance.

            I see.
We are going to buy the tickets there in Tokyo, too. I am looking forward to be there, I am so excited already.

I asked you about Musashino because probably we are going to stay in Mitaka, which close to Musashino.
How funny that there is an other person, who goes to Tokyo this time (in early December, right?) to meet with the parents 😀 me, too. I am going to see my boyfriends’ parents for the very first time… in the first week of December.
But I have never been in Japan before and my Japanese is not that good as yours. I am still a beginner, unfortunately my boyfriend does not want to teach me in Japanese as he always ask me to speak in English >..<

  2. My favourite area for shopping was always Ikebukuro and sunshine city, but sometimes the cheapest prices were in Ueno/Okachimachi’s Ameyoko (if you like market style and having people yelling at you to buy stuff). Have you tried Ueno Zoo before? If you like gardens I’d also recommend Rikugien in Komagome. I’ve also found that Akihabara is usually a good place for guys to get their shopping on. Hope you have fun on your trip!

    • Thanks for your suggestions! I’ve spent zero time in Ikebukuro, and I went to Ueno for the zoo but not for shopping. I’ll have to check it out! My fiancé avoids Akiba for the most part, but maybe I can get him to go to Ikebukuro.
