F is for Fuji Q Highland in today’s A to Z Challenge! Fuji Q Highland is an amusement park located in the city of Fujiyoshida 富士吉田市 in Yamanashi Prefecture 山梨県, Japan. There are several high-speed roller coasters and the (in?)famous Haunted Hospital.
One of my favorite roller coasters is Fujiyama, which was once the tallest roller coaster, but is still a lot of fun and boasts a great view of Mt. Fuji as you careen along. While I adore the view from Fujiyama, I always enjoy the faster coasters, which makes Dodonpa my second favorite at this park. Dodonpa is named after the sound it makes as it speeds past a stationary viewer. This was once the fastest roller coaster, but it still boasts the fastest launch acceleration.
The best part of Fuji Q Highland, which aside from Thomas Land (featuring Thomas the Tank Engine) is an adult-oriented theme park, has to be the obake yashiki お化け屋敷 or Haunted Hospital. If you think haunted houses are kinda lame, this one will change your mind. You spend an hour stumbling through decrepit laboratories with ghoulish remnants of the hospital’s dark past, encountering deranged doctors and patients who never quite escaped, until you just don’t feel like you will ever escape… I don’t recommend it for the faint of heart, but if you think you can handle it I recommend the experience!
Check here for information on how to access the park. When I lived in Yamanashi Prefecture it was super close, so a lot of students I knew worked here part time. The Haunted Hospital was the ideal student part time job, with good pay and a lot of fun. If you’re ever in Yamanashi, I highly recommend setting aside a day to experience this world-class theme park with amazing views at the foot of Mt. Fuji!
